American International Group Inc. (AIG) President Robert Benmosche says he believes he will be healthy enough to devote his current level of commitment and energy to AIG over the next 12 to 18 months.

Benmosche, who took over as president and chief executive officer (CEO) of AIG, New York (NYSE:AIG), in August 2009, says that he has been responding welll to treatment and that his doctors have given him an encouraging prognosis.

"Most likely, I'll return to my retirement sometime in 2012," Benmosche says in a statement.

The AIG board has received a briefing on Benmosche's condition by a "physician fully aware of Mr. Benmosche's medical condition, test results, and prognosis," AIG says.

AIG Chairman Robert Miller says the company board is "conducting an active CEO succession planning process."

If Benmosche were unwilling or unable to continue to effectively serve in his current role, Miller would become interim CEO while the company looked for a long-term successor, AIG says.
