Aetna Inc. has hired Dr. Charles Saunders to be head of strategic diversification.

Saunders will help Aetna, Hartford (NYSE:AET), look for opportunities to diversify products, services and global opportunities, the company says.

Saunders, a physician, has been involved with private equity investors. Before that, he was chairman of Broadlane Inc., Dallas, a health care services company.

He also has been executive director of San Francisco General Hospital Managed Care Programs.

Saunders has a bachelor's degree in biological sciences from the University of Southern California and a medical degree from Johns Hopkins University. He is board certified in internal medicine and emergency medicine.

- Ullico Inc., Washington, has named Joseph Linehan acting president of Ullico Investment Advisors Inc. (UIA).

Linehan has a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Maryland, College Park.

- Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America, Minneapolis, a unit of Allianz S.E., Munich, Germany, has promoted Marc Olsen to succeed Bill Gaumond as vice president of finance and Niki Scanlon to vice president, controller.

Olsen previously was corporate controller, and Scanlon previously was director of financial reporting.

Olsen has a bachelor's degree and master's degree in business administration from the University of St. Thomas.

Scanlon has bachelor's degree in accounting and language and literature. She holds the Fellow of the Life Management Institute professional designation.

- Securian Financial Group, St. Paul, Minn., has promoted Pete Belute to assistant controller, from
director of financial reporting and accounting.

Belute has a bachelor's degree from Miami University.

- Towers Watson & Company, New York (NYSE:TW), has hired Bill Sharon to be senior consultant in the Southeast region.

Sharon has a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Pennsylvania State University and a master's degree from the University of South Florida. He holds the Certified Employee Benefits Specialist professional designation.

- Aon Risk Solutions, a unit of Aon Corp., Chicago (NYSE:AON), has hired Ron Calhoun to be national health care practice leader.

Calhoun previously was the president at Remi Group Inc., Charlotte, N.C., a company that provides comprehensive equipment and maintenance management programs.

- Financial Research Corp., Boston, has named Matthew Schott vice president, retirement income practice leader.

Schott has a bachelor's degree in economics from Duke University.
