Montana Insurance Commissioner Monica Lindeen is lobbying for a bill that would give her the authority to review individual and small group health insurance rate increases.

The bill, Montana House Bill 105, would require health insurers to file rates and justifications for changes 60 days before the rates were set to take effect.

The Montana health insurance commissioner could review the rate filings to ensure that they were accurate and complied with state and federal laws, officials say.

Montana is now one of three states in which the insurance commissioner has no authority to review rates.
