The Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) will hold a hearing on a proposed changed in the definition of the term "fiduciary" March 1 in Washington.

EBSA, an arm of the U.S. Department of Labor, says it could continue the hearing March 2 if enough members of the public want to speak.

EBSA published a proposed fiduciary definition rule in the Federal Register Oct. 22, 2010, and agency officials announced preliminary plans to hold a hearing in December 2010.

The hearing may be of interest to benefits professionals and financial institutions as well as to employers, securities industry professionals and 401(k) plan participants, officials say.

EBSA is accepting written public comments on the fiduciary definition until Feb. 3.
