U.S. Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans have been doing a better job of hanging on to enrollees than other U.S. carriers have.

Mark Farrah Associates, Kennebunkport, Maine, covers health insurance enrollment trends in a recent research report.

The 39 companies affiliated with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, Chicago, saw enrollment fall 1.1%, to about 96 million, between September 2009 and September 2010, the firm says.

Enrollment at other carriers fell 2.2%, to about 125 million, over that same period.

The Blues provide insurance for half of the enrollees and provide administrative services for plans insured by others for the rest, Mark Farray says.
