UnitedHealth Group has announced plans to offer members of its Medicare prescription drug plans to purchase generic drugs for as low as $2 at Safeway and Kroger supermarket pharmacies or through the company's own mail-order pharmacy, Prescription Solutions.
UnitedHealth's Pharmacy Saver program will provide plan participants with a 30-day supply of 317 generic drugs from Kroger and 80 generics from Safeway for a $2 out-of-pocket charge. Ninety-day supplies of seven drugs will be available for $2.
In addition, 90-day supplies of seven drugs will be available for $2 and another 28 drugs for $4 through the company's by-mail pharmacy service. The company hopes to contract with additional pharmacies in the future.
The new offering comes on the heels of competitor Humana's announcement last month that it would partner with Walmart to offer a low-cost Medicare drug plan next year, which could save participants $450 per year in drug costs.
"Economic pressures are putting a strain on many people's budgets, including many seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries," said Tom Paul, CEO of UnitedHealth's Medicare & retirement division. "We believe it's important that our members have the flexibility to access their drugs in the way that's most comfortable and convenient for them."
