Coventry Health Care Inc. (NYSE:CVH) hopes to grow in the Midwest by acquiring MHP Inc. and its subsidiaries from the Sisters of Mercy Health System.
Coventry, Bethesda, Md., would be getting plans with about 90,000 insured commercial plan members, 60,000 commercial "administrative services only" members, and 30,000 Medicare Advantage members from Sisters of Mercy, Chesterfield, Mo.
The plans, known as the Mercy Health Plans, serve members in Missouri and northwest Arkansas, Coventry says.
Coventry now has about 1.2 million members in its health plans in the Midwest.
Coventry is not saying how it will be paying for the Mercy Health Plans, but it says it hopes to get the regulatory approvals and other approvals needed to complete the deal by the end of October.
