The next major battle between regulators and insurers could come in the form of stranger-originated annuities.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners will host a public hearing on the annuities on May 20 in Washington, D.C. to examine whether the products are legal, and how they affect insurable interest. The hearing will also determine the extent of current consumer protection, and how lax regulations can be improved.

According to a release by the agency, the hearing will include testimony from consumers, regulators and industry representatives.
