A coalition of Latino groups has developed a health finance legislation priority list.
The leaders of the coalition – Latinos United for Healthcare, Washington – have sent a letter asking members of Congress to make health insurance affordable by creating a "public option" health plan; creating new incentives for small businesses; and improving consumer protection rules.
The group also is asking Congress to eliminate:
- The 5-year waiting period for legal U.S. residents to access Medicaid.
- Barriers that keep residents of Puerto Rico from enrolling in Medicare and Medicaid plans as easily as other Americans do.
- "Costly and ineffective verification requirements" that might "keep low-income, elderly and minority American citizens and legal residents from accessing" a proposed health insurance exchange system.
The LUH coalition members include the Hispanic Federation, New York; the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, Washington; the League of United Latin American Citizens, Washington; the National Council of La Raza, Washington; the National Puerto Rican Coalition, Washington; the National Hispanic Medical Association, Washington; and the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Washington.
