A health insurer expects to eliminate about 10% of its 28,000 positions this year but add 1,100 new positions.

Humana Inc., Louisville, says it expects to cut 2,500 jobs through a combination of attrition, "process efficiencies," outsourcing and position eliminations.

But Humana also will create new jobs, in areas such as medical-cost containment, pharmacy management and specialty products, and it will try to help employees affected by the layoffs fill some of the new slots, the company says.

Employees who leave Humana will get outplacement help, a severance package, and continuation of health benefits, the company says.

The recession has hurt commercial health plan enrollment at Humana and other carriers over the past year.

The reduction in the size of the company's workforce "is a direct result of Humana's need to align the size of our company with that of our membership," Humana President Michael McCallister says in a statement.
