Joseph Murphy is now the permanent Massachusetts insurance commissioner.
Murphy has been the acting commissioner since Nonnie Burnes left the post in September 2009.
Murphy became a first deputy commissioner in the Massachusetts Division of Insurance in 2006. He has been active in efforts to regulate the state's automobile insurance market.
Murphy also has worked as an aide in the Massachusetts Legislature.
He has a bachelor's degree in history and political science from Suffolk University.
