Garden State health carriers are trying to move toward a standardized electronic communications system.
America's Health Insurance Plans, Washington, and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, Chicago, are helping health insurers in New Jersey work with doctors to streamline the technology used to verify benefits and handle claims, initiative organizers say.
Initiative participants include carriers such as Aetna Inc., Hartford (NYSE:AET); AmeriHealth New Jersey, Mount Laurel, N.J.; CIGNA Corp., Philadelphia (NYSE:CI); Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, Newark, N.J.; and United Health Group Inc., Minnetonka Minn. (NYSE:UNH).
Organizers have signed 5 physician groups, including the Medical Society of New Jersey, Lawrenceville, N.J.
The initiative participants will try to develop a system that will give physicians the ability to communicate with as many carriers as possible through a single channel, such as a Web portal, rather than requiring them to use a separate channel for each carrier.
NaviNet Inc., Cambridge, Mass., will be charge of developing the communications system.
