Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is trying to promote wellness among state employees by holding a weight-loss competition.

McDonnell, R, has challenged the 1,500 state employees to lost 10 pounds each over 13 weeks.

McDonnell introduced the program at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, during an employee meeting sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, a unit of WellPoint Inc., Indianapolis.

Value Options Inc., Norfolk, Va., the company that manages Virginia state health plan behavioral health benefits, organized a videoconference of the talk for state employees who work away from Richmond.

The contest is open to all state employees. It will start Feb. 15 and end in mid-May, according to Anthem.
