The board of MetLife Inc. has elected Cheryl Gris? to be the lead director.
Gris? is set to succeed William Steere Jr. when Steere retires from the board at the beginning of the company's 2010 shareholders meeting.
Gris? retired in 2007 from a post as an executive at a large New England utility company. She has served on the board of MetLife, New York, (NYSE:MET) since 2004.
She has a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a law degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law.
Steere, the outgoing lead director, once was the chairman of Pfizer Inc., New York. He has been a MetLife director since 19999 and the company's lead director since 2006.

- The National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies, Fairfax, Va., has hired Susan Grimes to be diretor of marketing and communications.
Grimes was a NAILBA consultant this past summer. She has a bachelor's degree in psychology from Radford University.
- Aetna Inc., Hartford, has hired Sandip Patel to be head of international business.
Patel previously was managing partner and general manager for the India/South Asia region at IBM Global Business Services, a unit of International Business Machines Corp., Armonk, N.Y.
Patel has a degree from the University of Calcutta and 2 master's degrees from Boston University.
- Reed Group Ltd., Westminster, Colo., a return-to-work firm, has hired Victoria Schweitzer to be vice president of account services.
Schweitzer has a bachelor's degree in nursing and is a diplomat of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Professionals. She holds the Certified Professional in Disability Management professional designation.
- EPIC Advisors Inc., Rochester, N.Y., has hired Michael Upshur to be information processing manager and Ted Potter to be information technology manager.
Upshur previously worked for a unit for the retirement services unit of Wachovia Corp., Charlotte, N.C.
Potter previously was a senior solutions consultant at Croop-LaFrance Inc., Mountain View, Calif.
- The Aon Consulting arm of Aon Corp., Chicago, has hired Marc Bainbridge to be a vice president in the Tampa, Fla., health and benefits practice and Jason Swann to be an assistant vice president in the practice.
Both Bainbridge and Swann previously worked for Towers Perrin, Stamford, Conn.
- Alicare Medical Management, a care management unit of of Amalgamated Life Insurance Company, New York, has hired Pamela Gould to be a sales executive. Gould previously was regional sales director for Beacon Hospice in Boston.
