Married couples with financial plans communicate better and show greater mutual trust than couples without plans.

Market researchers at Country Financial, Bloomington, Ill, have reported that finding in a summary of results from a recent survey of about 2,000 married Americans.

Overall, 77% of married participants said their ability to communicate with their spouses about finances was excellent or good, and 68% said they trust their spouses to make investment decisions, the market researchers report.

But the researchers found a sharp variance in responses when participants were asked whether they had financial plans:

- 88% of the participants with financial plans rated communication about finances as good, and 76% of those participants said they trust their spouses to make good investment decisions.

- 62% of the participants without financial plans rated communication about finances as good, and only 58% of those participants said they trust their spouses to make good investment decisions.
