U.S. employers are less satisfied with health insurers, consultants report.

The consultants, at PricewaterhouseCoopers L.L.P., New York, have reported that finding in a summary of results from a survey of about 250 U.S. employers.

Small employers' health insurer satisfaction rate held steady, at 52%, but large employers' satisfaction fell to 59% this year, down from 64% in 2008, the consultants report.

Other survey findings:

- 60% of the employers surveyed said they will be increasing employee cost-sharing in the year ahead

- 71% of the employers offer wellness programs, and 67% offer disease management programs, but the employers with the programs are finding that employee participation rates are disappointing.

- Employers that have been using incentives to boost wellness program participation say simple incentives, such as cash, gift cards and annual premium savings, no longer seem to do much to improve participation rates.

- Fewer than half of the employers are satisfied with the personal health record systems and other technology tools that their carriers offer.
