About 45% of workers at small and midsize employers say access to wellness programs might lead them to stay in their current jobs longer.
Principal Financial Group Inc., Des Moines, Iowa, (NYSE:PFG) has included that figure in a summary of results from an October 2009 Web survey of 1,120 active employees and 602 retirees.
About 40% of the active employees said they believe workplace wellness programs encourage employees to work harder and perform better, and 26% said they believe wellness program participants miss fewer days of work.
Here are survey participants' top reasons for participating in wellness programs:
- Improving overall health: 47%.
- Reducing personal health care costs: 30%.
- Increasing longevity, and the number of years of healthy life: 30%.
- Earning employer participation incentives: 28%.
- Reducing stress: 28%.
The active employees who participated in the survey said they are especially interested in wellness programs, and 27% said they would like to have in-office fitness facilities.
