Elizabeth Sammis is now the interim Maryland insurance commissioner.

The previous commissioner, Ralph Tyler, has left to become the chief counsel at the federal Food and Drug Administration.

Sammis has been a deputy commissioner at the Maryland Insurance Administration since 2007. She also has worked as a government affairs executive for UnitedHealth Group Inc., Minnetonka, Minn.

Sammis has a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a doctorate in sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
