The Better Hearing Institute has published a guide to hearing aid purchase financial assistance programs.

The BHI, Washington, says it believes the guide may be the first of its kind.

In 2008, the average of cost of a hearing aid and related fittings and evaluations was about $1,700. Medicare does not cover hearing aids, and hearing aid benefits are also rare at state health insurance programs and private health insurance programs, according to the BHI.

"No one should go without a needed hearing aid because of an inability to pay," BHI Executive Director Sergei Kochkin says in a statement.
