Minnesota Life Insurance Company has posted an article that explains the ins and outs of employer compliance with provisions of the Genetic Information Nondisclosure Act that took effect Jan. 1.
The employment section of GINA, which incorporates procedures and remedies found in federal civil rights law, could impose fines on employers that discriminate against employees or applicants on the basis of genetic information, according to Minnesota Life, St. Paul, Minn., a unit of Minnesota Mutual Insurance Companies.
Minnesota Life's group insurance unit has come up with a guide that explains which employers are subject to GINA, exceptions to the law, and times when it is appropriate for insurers to base actions on genetic information.
