An insurer is updating the features of the benefit plans it markets to public-sector employers.
The Wellesley Hills, Mass., employee benefits division of Sun Life Financial Inc., Toronto, (TSX:SLF) has tried to make its group life and accidental death & dismemberment package and its long term disability plans more attractive to government employers.
The group life and AD&D plan now offers several new optional riders.
They include:
- A line of duty rider, which pays an additional benefit if a public safety officer's death or dismemberment occurs in the line of duty.
- A critical burn rider, which pays a benefit to victims of accidental burns who require reconstructive surgery.
- A fatal heart attack or stroke rider, which pays a benefit for public safety officers who die as a result of a heart attack or stroke suffered during non-routine, stressful or physically strenuous duties or training.
- An elected official coverage rider, which allows public-sector customers to include elected officials in a group plan regardless of the number of hours worked.
New options available with public-sector LTD plans include:
- A feature that can provide 6 extra months of coverage if an insured worker becomes disabled as a result of an assault that happens at work.
- An incentive feature that, in some cases, can provide 12 months of disability benefits free and clear of any deductions for benefits coming in from Social Security and other major disability programs.
- A health and dental coverage continuation premiums payment rider.
