CIGNA Corp. (NYSE:CI) has named a new chief executive officer and a new chairman.

David Cordani, 43, has taken over from H. Edward Hanway as president and CEO, and Isaiah Harris Jr. has succeeded Hanway as chairman.

Cordani previously was president and chief operating officer of CIGNA, Philadelphia, and Harris has been the company's vice chairman.

CIGNA first announced plans for the leadership transition in June 2009.

Cordani has issued a statement emphasizing that CIGNA's international benefits operations put it in a position to the leading "global health service company," not simply a major player in the U.S. market.

"At CIGNA, we have continued to innovate our products, clinical and service programs and are positioned to do well in a changing global marketplace by delivering better, differentiated value to our customers and clients," Cordani says.

Cordani has a bachelor's degree in from Texas A&M University and a master's in business from the University of Hartford. He holds the Chartered Financial Consultant and Certified Public Accountant professional designations.

Harris, also an accountant, has been a senior executive at BellSouth Corp., Atlanta.
