The workers who still have jobs may need more help with managing their finances.
Researchers at ComPsych Corp., Chicago, have based that suggestion on results from a survey of the employees of the employers that use ComPsych employee assistance programs.
About 39% of the participants said that they have received no raise this year, or that their compensation has dropped, and 11% said they are doing more work due to the fact that other employees were laid off.
For 20% of the survey participants, the downturn has coincided with an increase in the amount of stress and conflict among co-workers.
