A major medical stop-loss carrier says it will help employer clients pay for self-funded health plan members to get care in other countries.

The Overland Park, Kan., commercial insurance office of Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd., Zurich, says the office now will recognize medical travel provisions when backing self-funded employer health plans with medical stop-loss arrangements.

Westport Insurance Corp., a Swiss Re affiliate, underwrites stop-loss products in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Swiss Re says.

Swiss Re notes that, in some cases, getting an operation at a high-quality hospital in a country such as India might cost less than 10% as much as getting the same operation in the United States.

Swiss Re has picked WorldMedAssist L.L.C., Concord, Calif., to help with medical travel logistics.
