Only 37% of U.S. workers say they have disability insurance, but 97% say workers need some disability coverage.
UnumProvident Corp., Chattanooga, Tenn., has published those figures in a summary of results from a recent survey of 1,761 adult U.S. workers.
About 37% of the participants who have disability insurance did not appear to understand that the insurance would replace a portion of their income if they became disabled, UnumProvident says.
When researchers asked about benefit periods, 47% of the participants said they thought income replacement for a period of 1 year or less would be adequate.
