Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is defeating "Wal-Mart health bills" in most state legislatures, but it says it will make an effort to improve health benefits for part-time workers.
Wal-Mart, Bentonville, Ark., says Lee Scott, the company's chief executive, will describe the benefits changes Sunday during a National Governors Association meeting in Washington.
Wal-Mart says it will reduce the time part-time workers must wait to join the company's health coverage program, let part-time employees who are eligible for health benefits buy coverage for dependent children, and open more than 50 new health clinics in Wal-Mart stores.
