A U.S. unit of Manulife Financial Corp. is using the Web to warn consumers about how much they might have to pay for nursing home care and home health care.

John Hancock, Boston, has put a fast, interactive, U.S. long term care cost map on its new LTC insurance consumer site, at Document Link

By rolling over a state and clicking on a metropolitan area, visitors can see 2005 LTC cost information for that metropolitan area, according to Hancock, a subsidiary of Manulife, Toronto.

Hancock has based the data in the map on information from an outside survey. Researchers found that the average cost for a year of nursing home care was $71,140 in 2005.

Hancock also has developed new consumer marketing materials that focus on a few key messages, such as discussions about how LTC insurance can help consumers preserve their independence and protect their retirement plans.
