The average monthly base cost of assisted living increased 15% this year, to $2,905.[@@]

That works out to $34,860 a year, according to a survey released by the MetLife Mature Market Institute, Westport, Conn., an affiliate of MetLife Inc., New York.

The study was conducted by LifePlans Inc., Waltham, Mass.

The most expensive city was Boston, where people in assisted living facilities spent an average of $4,629 per month. The lowest cost was Jackson, Miss., where the average was just $1,642.

Assisted living is housing for older adults who need help with daily living. Quarters can range from a small house to a large apartment-style complex.

Here are average assisted living costs for some other communities included in the survey:

- Chicago, $3,117.

- Hartford, $2,986.

- New York, $3,423.

- Little Rock, Ark., $2,106.

- Philadelphia, $3,364.

- Phoenix, Ariz., $2,095.

- San Francisco area, $3,700.

- Washington, $3,828.

- Wilmington, Del., $4,251.
