Health plan members are starting to get more clues from their plans about what health care really costs.[@@]

Researchers at the National Business Group on Health, Washington, and Watson Wyatt & Company Holdings, Washington, have published figures supporting that conclusion on a survey of 555 large employers. Each of the participating employers has at least 1,000 workers.

Researchers found that 20% of participating employers now give employees information about unit prices for health care services, up from 4% in 2003.

But employers are still more likely to make other types of information available: 35% supply quality information for hospitals or other providers, and 71% provide health information.
