NU Online News Service, Jan. 6, 12:27 p.m. – WellPoint Health Networks Inc., Thousand Oaks, Calif., has introduced a discount program to encourage members of its managed care plans to try generic prescription drugs.
The program, the GenericSelect program, provides a $10 discount off co-payments for the first prescription when plan members buy GenericSelect program drugs.
WellPoint says the program will encourage members to use generic drugs within a therapeutic class, such as treatments for depression, not simply generic equivalents of specific brand-name drugs.
Pharmacies participating in the program will be responsible for giving patients the discounts, WellPoint says.
