NU Online News Service, Oct. 2, 12:45 p.m. – Most American workers dream about being able to live comfortably in retirement, according to a telephone survey conducted in June and July by Manulife USA, Boston, a unit of Manulife Financial Corp., Toronto.
Manulife researchers interviewed 400 U.S. workers over age 21 about their financial dreams and their financial fears.
The researchers found that 96% of the respondents dreamed about having a comfortable retirement.
Seventy-six percent said they dreamed about upgrading their lifestyles; 69%, about helping adult children financially; and 67%, about buying or improving a home.
Sixty-three percent dreamed about paying for someone's college education, and 62% about early retirement.
Meanwhile, only 24% of the respondents felt they had set enough money aside to be on track for a comfortable retirement, and only 25% believed they had set enough aside to pay for their children's college education.
When researchers asked about worst fears, 72% of the respondents identified suffering financially due to an unexpected expense, and 69% listed losing money due to stock-market volatility.
