NU Online News Service, Oct. 31, 2:05 p.m. – The Senate has approved legislation requiring health insurers to provide the same benefits to mental patients as they provide for victims of physical illness.

The measure, passed by a majority voice vote, was included as an amendment in the appropriations bill for the departments of Labor, Education and Health and Human Services.

The measure attempts to tighten the requirements in a 1996 federal "mental health parity" law. That law lets insurers provide fewer benefits for mental health care.
