Millennials comprise an estimated 36% of the U.S. workforce, making this generation of workers highly valuable to any local economy in which they live, according to a new report from SmartAsset that cites Department of Labor research.

With the flexibility afforded them by rapidly developing technologies and an ability to work remotely, many millennial households are relocating to pursue job opportunities, higher pay and preferable lifestyles or for family or other considerations.

Cities that attract millennials, SmartAsset noted, can expect stronger and more diverse workforces, additional tax revenue and disposable income that flows to local businesses. But the influx of this cohort can also lead to more competitive housing markets and a change in the business mix for preexisting locals.

To determine which locales are proving to be most popular with millennials, SmartAsset ranked 254 of the largest U.S. cities based on the number who relocated to each one in 2024. Researchers gathered data from the U.S. Census Bureau 1-Year American Community Survey for that year and ranked them by the percentage of the total population represented by millennials who moved into the city in 2024.
