Edelman Financial Engines recently informed its customers that a data breach incident resulted in some of their personal information being accessed — including name, date of birth, address, phone number, email and other financial planning information.

The Maine attorney general's office indicates that 5,083 people, including five in the state, were affected.

On Jan. 7, an unauthorized third party accessed some of its clients' personal information, Edelman said in a letter posted on the Maine AG's website.

"We quickly detected this activity, promptly terminated the unauthorized access, and investigated the unauthorized activity with the support of external security experts," Edelman said.

Edelman Financial Engines said in a statement sent to ThinkAdvisor via email Thursday that the firm "quickly detected and contained a data security incident involving unauthorized third-party access to a very small subset of client information. We take the privacy and security of our clients' information very seriously and regret any inconvenience this has caused."

While Edelman said the firm is "not aware of identity theft or fraud related to this incident," it has arranged for its customers to enroll in enhanced credit and identity monitoring services at no cost for 24 months, provided by Kroll, which specializes in risk mitigation and response.
