While Social Security beneficiaries will receive a 2.8% cost-of-living boost in 2026, amounting to, on average, a $56 per month increase, Social Security advocates remained convinced it's not enough.
"In 2026, many seniors will still be financially struggling, as Social Security benefits fail to keep up with rising costs," Shannon Benton, executive director of The Seniors Citizens League, said Thursday in an email. "While healthcare, rent, and groceries remain unusually expensive, many retirees will continue to struggle to cover their basic needs."
Right now, "several bills in Congress aim to increase Social Security benefits immediately, offering much-needed relief to millions of retirees," Benton added. "But with the 2026 elections on the horizon, it’s unclear if these bills are genuine efforts to help seniors or just political messaging. For millions of seniors, the need for action is urgent."
