Many of your clients may be working at age 65 or beyond. Depending upon their working situation, they may or may not need to enroll in Medicare.
There can be a number of factors to consider:
— If your client is covered through their own employer or by their spouse’s employer, what is the size of the employer?
— Do they want to continue to contribute to an HSA?
— Is their current coverage considered to be creditable by Medicare?
— Are they using COBRA coverage?
There can be penalties and denied coverage in some cases for not meeting required enrollment deadlines.
Every client’s situation is different, so it is critical to review your client’s situation if they are working at 65 or beyond to help them determine the best time to enroll in Medicare. The current open enrollment period ends Sunday.
Use this FAQ guide to help ensure that you are providing your client with the best advice in this critical area.
