International Living Magazine has published a new report about the future of retirement abroad, highlighting a combination of domestic and international trends that are reshaping Americans’ considerations about living outside the United States during life after work.

What was once considered a niche lifestyle is now a major trend, the analysis notes, with hundreds of thousands of retired Americans living outside the country.

Their reasons for doing so vary, with some seeking a lower cost of living and others seeking a different pace of life. Others choose an international retirement for cultural enrichment or access to more affordable medical care.

Whatever their rationale, the report finds, retirees who are part of the “international living movement” are entering a new era.

“The world is shifting faster than at any time since International Living first opened its pages to readers in 1979,” the report states. “Costs are rising at home, healthcare systems are buckling, currencies are adjusting, technology is rewriting what ‘work’ means, and the very definition of retirement is being rewritten.”

So, while international living makes a lot of sense for some people, it’s important for current and future retirees to consider how external factors may affect their desired lifestyles.
