Vanguard has published a new report that analyzes its retirement plan data and multiple 401(k) plan industry trends to uncover insights into the behaviors and decisions made by Americans as they plan for and enter retirement.

The paper, How America Retires, builds on the long-running How America Saves research series, focusing the lens even closer on the challenges facing pre-retirees and those who have already left the workforce.

In a statement about the new report, Vanguard Managing Director Lauren Valente said turning savings into income is one of the most important and complex steps in retirement planning, noting that more than 100 million Americans are now covered by defined contribution plans with some $12 trillion in assets at stake.

“That’s why we’re proud to launch How America Retires and provide a roadmap for building resilient, income-generating strategies that support retirees throughout the next phase of their lives,” Valente said.
