Baby boomers have lots of reasons for relocating after retirement. Some may be looking for the biggest bang for their buck — and as a cohort, they have the highest portion of wealth among all generations.

Others no longer need to pay to be close to work in a busy and expensive city center, or are tired of maintaining a large home and yard. Still others desire warm weather, a familiar community and other amenities.

Whatever their reasons for moving to another area, boomers ultimately benefit the communities they choose with their dollars in the local economy, SmartAsset noted in a recent study. Boomers may also effect shifts in the overall demographics and job market.

SmartAsset researchers ranked 267 U.S. cities with populations of 100,000 or more based on the percentage of the population represented by boomers who moved into the city last year. For the study, they tapped data from the Census Bureau’s 1-Year American Community Survey for 2023. They defined boomers as people 55 to 74.
