MetLife has long had a sizeable derivatives program to smooth out its risk to persistently low interest rates. Higher interest rates, foreign currency changes and the company's own credit spreads resulted in a net after-tax loss of $924 million this quarter. It has left MetLife with a 90 percent drop in quarterly profit. Its operating profit, however, beat estimates.
