Football is a blood sport. This does not condemn football. But we should always be honest with ourselves on why we like this game that breaks so many people in ways that can never be fixed. In this in-depth article that interviews NFL players themselves, what emerges is a portrait of health and injury so far outside of the normal human context as to boggle the mind. What NFL players go through with their inevitable injuries is not unlike what soldiers go through on the battlefield; the specter of grim bodily harm and the unwillingness to let it stay them from their desire course of action. If everybody who went to the hospital saw their injuries as NFL players do, there would be no need for health insurance…and an entire nation of broken people.
