Whew! It's over. The labor dispute between NFL owners and referees has been settled. No longer will fans worry that an inexperienced replacement ref will blow a call and cost their favorite team a win. But what started the battle goes to the heart of how retirement is funded in the U.S. The regular refs balked when owners wanted to switch their traditional, employer-sponsored pension to a 401(k) plan. Maybe that's because the refs knew that 401(k)s have generally been a loss for Americans trying to build retirement savings.
