Although 2010 continued what has been over the last few years a difficult climate for disability income insurance sales, carriers participating in the 2010 U.S. Individual Disability Market Survey reported an increase in total in-force premium of 0.7%, approaching $4.5 billion.
General Re Life Corporation, a Berkshire Hathaway Company, released the results of the survey in which 17 individual carriers participated. The report, which serves as gauge for the industry, covers Non-Cancelable (Non-Can), Guaranteed Renewable (GR), and Buy-Sell in-force and sales premium results for 2010.
Non -Can and GR in-force premium results increased less than 1%, to $3.8 billion and $551 million respectively. Buy-Sell in-force premium decreased 0.2% to $73.5 million.
The results were much like 2009; the number of in-force policies declined about 2% across all three product lines.
Total IDI sales premium was 6% lower than in 2009, totaling $325 million in 2010.
