Mark Bertolini will succeed Ronald Williams as chairman of Aetna Inc. April 8, the company says.
Bertolini, 54, took over from Williams 61, as chief executive officer of Aetna, Hartford (NYSE:AET), in November 2010.
When Williams leaves the Aetna board, the size of the board will fall to 13, from 14, the company says.
Aetna announced the succession plans in October 2010.
Bertolini says in a statement that he hopes to make Aetna a "global leader in empowering people to live healthier lives."
Bertolini, a long-time health insurance industry veteran, began working for Aetna in February 2003. He became president of the company in July 2007.
