An insurance company foundation has given $2 million to efforts to erect a memorial honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

The MetLife Foundation, an affiliate of MetLife Inc., New York, has donated the money to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation Inc., Washington.

The memorial project now has raised a total of $93 million. Other project donors include AFLAC Inc., Atlanta; CIGNA Corp., Philadelphia; Prudential Financial Inc., Newark, N.J.; and State Farm Insurance Company, Bloomington, Ill.

Construction of the memorial, at the National Mall in Washington, began in November 2006 and is expected to be completed in 2009.
