Few U.S. workers understand how little protection they have against disability.[@@]
America's Health Insurance Plans, Washington, has published data supporting that conclusion in a report on a survey of 800 full-time U.S. workers conducted in August by researchers at Ayres, McHenry and Associates, Alexandria, Va.
Some survey findings:
- 58% of the participants believed they had disability coverage, when the reality is that only 35% have disability coverage.
- 30% of workers over 30 will experience a disability that keeps them from working for at least 3 months at some point in their careers, but only 35% of the survey participants said the risk of disability is over 20%.
- 10% of workers who take injury-related disability leaves of more than 3 months get workers' compensation. Only 22% of the survey participants said the percentage of injury-related disability leaves was under 20%.
