Some employers say fitness programs are leading to measurable results.[@@]
When researchers affiliated with the National Business Group on Health, Washington, surveyed 84 large U.S. employers, they found that 20% said fitness programs had increased worker productivity and cut absenteeism.
The researchers also found that 27% of the employers said fitness programs had reduced health care costs.
Fitness program results might be even better if employers could persuade more employees to participate.
Although more than two-thirds of the employers surveyed have on-site fitness centers, only one-third of the employers have persuaded more than 25% of their workers to use company fitness programs. Only 2% have persuaded more than half of their workers to use the programs.
