Men Take ‘Bonding Leave,’ Too: New York State Family Leave Insurer

One thing the new New York paid family leave law is doing is giving fathers a chance to take leave to bond with newborn babies and newly adopted children.

ShelterPoint Life Insurance Company — a Garden City, New York-based insurer that’s been active in helping employers comply with the Empire State’s new paid leave mandate — recently released a little data on bonding leave claims from men.

The firm reported that, as of May:

  • 27% of its bonding leave claims were for men.
  • 29% of the men involved filed claims for two to three weeks of leave.
  • 17% of the men filed claims for six to eight weeks of leave.
  • 40% filed claims for short periods of leave, or intermittent days of leave.
