Independent broker-dealer American Portfolios Financial Services has been recognized as a 2018 Best Company to Work for in New York State for the third year in a row.

The Holbrook, New York-based IBD, one of the Investment Advisor Broker-Dealers of the Year for the past three years, received the honor from the New York State Society for Human Resources Management. Its roughly 100 employees support 815 independent investment professionals in about 370 branches nationwide.

“It’s been a long-held and firm belief of mine that a good company cannot become a great one if it doesn’t put their people first and foremost,” American Portfolios CEO Lon T. Dolber said in a statement. “At American Portfolios, we strive to make sure our employees are happy, knowing that they will deliver optimal customer service when their needs are met.”

According the IBD, its staff members receive benefits that include health insurance, free life insurance, 401(k) matching, stock options, bonus incentives, performance and service awards, tuition reimbursement, free license testing, and access to training seminars and courses.

The company also provides Six Sigma education to boost customer service, as well as a flexible work schedule, health and wellness lunch and learns, appreciation events, massage sessions and private coaching sessions with a registered dietician.

“We have always been dedicated to creating a positive and supportive work environment, realizing that when you treat the people who work for you well, they are not only better equipped to do their jobs, but they are more motivated to go the extra distance for the company and its customers,” explained Lisa DiBella, the IBD’s head of human resources, in a statement.

In 2017, American Portfolios rolled out an employee mentorship program to support emerging business leaders, shortened working hours on Fridays and added a casual dress code. In 2018, employees began receiving full pay for up to 12 weeks of family leave and launched a five-module program based on the firm’s core customer service principles.

The IBD works with nonprofit organizations like World T.E.A.M. Sports, which runs athletic events for disabled and able-bodied citizens to achieve a common goal.

Earlier this year, American Portfolios hosted the finals for the Long Island Virtual Enterprises International Business Plan Competition, which included nine high school students presenting business plans to a panel of judges. The firm has worked with VEI since 2014.
