Many of the health insurers that participated in a recent survey about the U.S. individual major medical market hope to be in that market in 2019.

Analysts at eHealth Inc., a pioneer in efforts to sell insurance through the web, have reported that finding in a summary of results from a recent survey.

The company sent survey invitations to a “broad range of health insurers.” Nineteen responded. All of the participants sent in their responses from Feb. 26 through March 12.

Analysts found that:

  • 1 insurer had decided to reduce its level of participation in the individual major medical market in 2019.
  • 4 insurers were not sure what they would do in 2019.
  • 11 insurers were hoping to maintain or increase their current level of participation in the market.

The analysts also asked about the insurers’ thoughts on Trump administration proposals for stabilizing or supplementing the individual major medical market.

  • 13 said loosening the current essential health benefits package coverage requirements would help.
  • 8 said adding a federal reinsurance program would help.
  • 8 said restoring funding for the Affordable Care Act cost-sharing reduction subsidy would help.
  • 1 is interested in offering coverage through the new multi-state association health plan program proposed by the U.S. Department of Labor.
